Salmon Gravlax and Mustard Cream Canapés
Packed with citrus zest and served in edible, crispy shells, this gravlax recipe paired perfectly with a clementine- and lemon-laced cocktail. Cure the salmon in vodka the day before, but for less time than traditional recipes call for. The flavour of the salmon shines through; the fish has a beautiful glossy colour, and a silky texture to boot.

Holiday Dumplings
These pork dumplings are festively garnished with dried cranberries, red onion and parsley, with a touch of lemon. You can prep these little parcels in advance and reheated them just before serving.

Labneh with Za’atar
This Middle Eastern-inspired spread is made with yogurt and mixed spices. It’s delicious served on crackers, with vegetable crudités or simply coated with za’atar, as we’ve done here.

Assorted Italian Appetizers
Many hands make light work, especially when you’ve got a pile of pita crisps and three different ways to top ’em: blue cheese, pear and walnut; mascarpone, fig and prosciutto; and deluxe pizza fixings. Some advance prep the day before will pay off big time when everyone gathers around your kitchen island. Organize all the pita toppers on the counter and then have the kids divide and conquer. Within no time, the party will be crunching.

Shrimp à L’Orange Skewers
Sauté some shrimp, prepare the sauce (you can reheat it later) and segment the orange early in the day (go to ricardocuisine.com/en/video for tips on sectioning citrus). When the party starts, pass the brochette to your BFF and ask them to skewer all the ingredients up for showtime.

Fig and Goat Cheese Bites with Pistachios and Honey
It’s no surprise that fig trees like things hot and dry. And while our rooftop gets its fair share of sunshine, we’re the first to admit that Canada is not exactly Greece. Regardless, our fig tree repaid us for our undivided attention by producing no fewer than (drum roll) 10 perfect figs this year. To fully honour the miraculous fruits, we turned them into bite-sized appetizers that transported us to the Mediterranean.
