Homemade Yogurt (without a yogurt maker)
Homemade Yogurt (without a yogurt maker)
Ingredients
- 4 cups (1 litre) partly skimmed milk
- 1/2 cup (55 g) skim milk powder
- 1/2 cup (125 ml) plain yogurt
Instructions
- In a pot, combine the milk and milk powder. Warm over medium heat, stirring, until a thermometer reads 185°F (85°C). Remove from the heat.
- Let the mixture cool to 110°F (45°C). Stir in the yogurt. Pour the mixture into clean, warm glass jars. Cover the jars.
- Place the jars in a baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot (not boiling) water. Transfer to the oven. Turn on the oven light (the light will keep the oven at a temperature that promotes fermentation). Leave the jars in the oven until the yogurt is set, about 4 to 6 hours. Remove from the oven.
- Remove the jars from the water and dry off with a clean dishcloth. Refrigerate the yogurt for 4 hours. The yogurt will keep for 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
