Galaktoboureko (Ouzo Cream-Filled Pastries)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 lb (454 g) phyllo dough, thawed (see note)
  • Ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups (500 ml) sugar
  • 1 cup (250 ml) water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup (250 ml) sugar
  • 1 cup (250 ml) flour
  • 5 cups (1.25 litres) milk
  • 3 tablespoons (45 ml) Ouzo
  • 4 eggs

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, heat the sugar and water until the sugar has dissolved. Add the cinnamon, orange zest and lemon juice. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Remove the cinnamon and zest. Set aside.
