Spiced Vanilla Extract
Adding fragrant spices to this vanilla extract makes it an affordable surprise, but infusing the base alcohol takes time. Prepare this gift ahead of time so that the extract has at least two weeks to develop. Try it in pancakes or French toast on Boxing Day.
Ingredients
- 4 vanilla beans, split lengthwise and seeds scraped
- 4 slices candied ginger
- 4 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks, each about 3 inches (7.5 cm) long
- 1/2 cup (125 ml) dark rum or vodka
Instructions
- In a small bottle, combine all the ingredients. Tightly close the bottle and shake to mix thoroughly. Infuse for 2 weeks at room temperature.
- Strain through a sieve. The extract will keep for 6 months in an airtight bottle at room temperature.
